Visitors, whether young or old, experience a wonderful variety of regions on their journey through Thuringia and Franconia. On the northernmost stage of the German Toy Route, the fine culture has been perceptible since the times of the Bach family of musicians. In their hometown of Arnstadt they still pay homage to the magic of music. Waltershausen and Tabarz were regarded as a distinguished address for those seeking relaxation. And the toy industry there was also of the same standard, producing the finest dolls and accessories for the elegant taste.
The people in southern Thuringia led a completely different life. In the depths of the Thuringian Forest many families produced glass art and toys for the whole world under often poor conditions. This tradition can also be vividly traced on the German Toy Road. Long-established family businesses invite guests to visit them, an old marble mill shows almost forgotten skills and the glassblowers enchant visitors with their craftsmanship. In addition, the Thuringian Forest offers an incomparable range of sports and leisure activities. At the foot of the Thuringian Forest, Sonneberg, the former world capital of toys, invites you to visit the German Toy Museum.
Just a few kilometres further on and closely linked to the Thuringian toy tradition, the Coburger Land stretches with the Bavarian doll town of Neustadt, Rödental and the residence town of Coburg. In Upper Franconia the guests can expect charming doll museums, amusement parks and well-known toy manufacturers, who are still loyal to tradition. Many sights such as the Veste Coburg or the numerous castles can be discovered during a visit to the German Toy Road.
To the south, the German Toy Route makes a small detour through the enchanting landscape of Franconian Switzerland, which can be explored wonderfully with the old steam locomotive. Here, too, you will meet toy enthusiasts in Muggendorf and Gößweinstein.
In Nuremberg, a toy history awaits you that reaches back to the dock makers in the Middle Ages and can be seen particularly beautifully in the toy museum. The close connection with the toy tradition can be seen in many places in the medieval trading town. And Nuremberg has retained this significance to this day when thousands of dealers visit the International Toy Fair every year, the most important event of its kind in the world.
Variety is written in capital letters along the German Toy Route, this unique holiday route that you can discover „playfully“.
